• XP Question Regarding Bluetooth Usage

From [email protected]@21:1/5 to All on Sat Dec 14 18:15:21 2024
One of my computers is XP SP3. It is wired only, no wireless
    connections.

Would a Bluetooth adapter allow certain devices to be connected wireless
to my XP comp without me having to setup my XP for wireless? I want my
Usenet and Net usage to stay wireless.

No. Bluetooth-to-Bluetooth connection requires user confirmation. And using connected Bluetooth device as an internet gateway, requires additional
setup. All these are required for security. Otherwise, it would open a
security risk, since the computer will connect to Bluetooth devices which aren't yours - which who knows what the other side might do, even if you already have a firewall.

I didn't get the impression that the OP was opposed to interacting with
    and configuring the connection.

Rather I took the OP's question to be can I get Internet connectivity
using Bluetooth and without needing to configure 802.11 wireless.

It's been a LONG time since I've done anything with Bluetooth other than >headphones, but I think that it should be possible for the OP to pair
the XP system with a Bluetooth device that is used as an Internet
    connection.

I think that Bluetooth based tethering used to be a thing. But it's bee
too long and I don't remember.

I do think that Bluetooth based tethering would provide what I
understand the OP to be asking about.

If not Bluetooth tethering, then perhaps Bluetooth connected modem and a
PPP stack / Dial Up Networking on XP using said Bluetooth modem could
work. I'd assume that the modem & PPP would be very short distance,
possibly the same device that would then terminate said PPP and route
    out it's normal Internet connection.

Too damn complicated for me. I'll stick with things the way they are.
I've had our home computers secure for years with no bad stuff getting
in. I ain't gonna go digging holes in the system and let the garbage in
    from the Internet sewer.

    Thanks for answering, though.

My old Blackberry Classic has Bluetooth tethering so its possible but
the data rate is VERY low even within a metre or two of the target device.
