I'm using Win XP.

Somewhere along the line I goofed when renaming a drive.

I am now stuck with my E: (External) drive with a double letter - E
(E) - instead of a single letter.

I keep trying to rename it with a single letter in Device Manager to
no avail.

The original mistake I made had it sharing the name of my G: drive -
as such - E (G). I now managed to get it to display as E (E).

Suggestions?

What you've renamed is the volume label of the file system in the drive.
This can be done from the "My Computer" in Windows Explorer. Select the
drive then rename it just like when renaming a file or folder. Other alternative method for renaming a volume label is from the Command Prompt, using the LABEL command. e.g.

label e: "Drive Name"

Network share name is an entirely separate name. It won't affect the file system's volume label (or vice versa). It's merely an alias for the shared folder when viewed remotely.

What you've renamed is the volume label of the file system in the drive.
This can be done from the "My Computer" in Windows Explorer. Select the

Renaming "like a file or folder" does not work in Explorer. It
retains its present E: (E) name.

From all the searches I did, only using Device Manager works for
renaming a disk.

I have no idea about "Network share name" stuff.

I guess I'm just going to have to settle for E: (E) as the name of the
disk.
