How To Update From XP To 10 or 11?

My XP and my Windows 7 computers came with their OS's on them. I have
never thought of updating because of all I've read about the problems
caused by the newer versions. Plus, they obsolete many of the
incredible useful programs I have on my older computers, especially
since some of the best of these programs are very old and have no
updated versions to run on the newer Windows.

It just now occurred to me that if I wanted to update someday, not
that I do, but if I did, I'd have no clue as to how to do it.

Where do you get the newer versions? Certainly not on the Web where
it's for sale at $19. Yeah, I know, there are other sites selling
    various versions for $100+.

Just curious. (Yeah, I know I'm slow and ignorant despite being on the
Web for quite a number of decades. The problem is, I just don't give a
damn about "progress". Progress usually hurts - especially when it
screws up other things around it - and I ain't just talking about
    software.)

Just exercise your wallet Grandad and buy yourself a new computer. You
can't take it with you. I thought you hated Microsoft. If nothing else
you sure are inconsistent. I could have sworn in one of your latest
rants you riled against running programs with administrator privileges.
Well you're going to be shit out of luck doing otherwise with 'old'
programs on Windows 11. Quite why you are considering Windows 10 is
beyond me as it goes EOL next year and don't get me started on the
hardware issues you are going to face. Good luck with the drivers and
TPM. Have a little Google on the last one. Don't worry, I'm sure there's workarounds for 80-90% of the issues. How long are you planning on living?

I have exactly the same problem. My Windows 7 laptop was stolen, but I
managed to get a second-hand one where they loaded Windows 10 32-bit
    -- avoid Windows 11, which doesn't have a 32-bit option, and so won't
    run older programs.

There should be a law to say that abandonware, like Windows XP and
Windows 7 (a\nd soon Windows 10) should be made public domain and open
source when they are abandoned, so that data can still be accessible.

    If not, Digitization = Disaster.

Yes it does. I can run the same 32 bit programs as I run on Windows 10.
I have 2 programs running here from Quarkexpress and Macromedia which
are running on Windows 11. One requires administrator privileges and the
other a manual install because the installer no longer works but the
program works fine in compatibility mode XP. These programs are 26 and
    24 years old.

It's easy to verify what I have just said. Anyone with Windows 11 can
run Task Manager and it will show all 32 bit programs running. It says
32 bit in brackets next to the exe.

I've not found anything yet that runs on Windows 10 that doesn't run on
Windows 11. I'm sure there are but the issues aren't always the fault of Microsoft. For instance a previous version of VMWare Workstation won't
run on my later machines because of changes to the USB Root Hub. That's
a hardware and a driver issue not being updated by VMWare. Old games are notorious.

Well I just run a game I wrote 40 years ago in z80 asm and it runs fine
on the Fuse emulator but thanks for the prompt. I needed to test that
for the sake of humanity and just in case I meet someone someday who has
a fleeting interest. It's a dream I doubt will ever realise but you give
me hope. Does that count? I did convert it from tape to .tap probably
20+ years ago. Is that cheating? I'm not sure what the rules are, if
any, for running stuff that old. Let me know. Are you the oracle in such matters? I hope so.

TBH, I prefer to run stuff that old on the original hardware for lots of reasons but that's a debate for another time. I look forward to your
reply to occam as I am genuinely intrigued about what programs from that
era are so important to you that you recommend foregoing Microsoft's
latest and greatest. To me it's simple. It will soon be their only
supported OS and security updates are my utmost priority. "Avoid Windows
11" you say. Is that "at all costs"? Sounds a bit reckless to me in
exchange for a bit of nostalgia you could indulge in many other ways. No?

My provider does carry "alt.windows7.general" (with an "n" after the "i") That cross-post was to "alt.widows7.general" (no "n" after the "i").

    Sigh.

Yes it does. I can run the same 32 bit programs as I run on Windows 10.
I have 2 programs running here from Quarkexpress and Macromedia which
are running on Windows 11. One requires administrator privileges and the >>> other a manual install because the installer no longer works but the
program works fine in compatibility mode XP. These programs are 26 and
    24 years old.

32-bit Windows will run 8-bit programs, Windows 11 will not.

Just out of interest, what 8-bit programs are you still running Steve?

askSam, Inmagic, Xywrite, Family History System mostly.

askSam does have a Windows version, but in many ways it's not as
    versatile,

Yes, I do have nostalgia for research data I have collected over the
last 30 years, still keep adding to, and still want to access every
    day.

Yeah, I don't know why people want to play games. Writing them is a
blast though and very challenging. Databases however are not my thing,
but each to their own. I wouldn't call them silly mind, the only way I
can describe my feelings about them is akin to how I imagine it feels to
have an alien sucking your life force out of you.

I am still struggling with this 8 bit thing though. The applications you mention seem to run on DOS. Wasn't that 16 bit. I didn't really play
with PCs back then much. I mean 8 bit processors only directly address
64k although you can page in blocks of memory but even so the amount of
data you seem to suggest you have collected would indicate a bit of a
struggle going on so how does that all work.

Steve seems to have vaporized. Perhaps he will return. Anyway, for those
of us who are silly and not serious like Steve it seems you can run
MSDOS on Windows 11 using VMWare Workstation. Probably other DOS
variants as well. It's a serious option for silly people and you get to
use Windows 11. Yeah, groan, but yunno security updates. This is not a
cue Shadow. You have been warned!
