How To Update From XP To 10 or 11?
My XP and my Windows 7 computers came with their OS's on them. I have
never thought of updating because of all I've read about the problems
caused by the newer versions. Plus, they obsolete many of the
incredible useful programs I have on my older computers, especially
since some of the best of these programs are very old and have no
updated versions to run on the newer Windows.
It just now occurred to me that if I wanted to update someday, not
that I do, but if I did, I'd have no clue as to how to do it.
Where do you get the newer versions? Certainly not on the Web where
it's for sale at $19. Yeah, I know, there are other sites selling
various versions for $100+.
Just curious. (Yeah, I know I'm slow and ignorant despite being on the
Web for quite a number of decades. The problem is, I just don't give a
damn about "progress". Progress usually hurts - especially when it
screws up other things around it - and I ain't just talking about
software.)

I have exactly the same problem. My Windows 7 laptop was stolen, but I managed to get a second-hand one where they loaded Windows 10 32-bit
-- avoid Windows 11, which doesn't have a 32-bit option, and so won't
run older programs
There should be a law to say that abandonware, like Windows XP and
Windows 7 (a\nd soon Windows 10) should be made public domain and open
source when they are abandoned, so that data can still be accessible.
If not, Digitization = Disaster.

Yes it does. I can run the same 32 bit programs as I run on Windows 10.
I have 2 programs running here from Quarkexpress and Macromedia which
are running on Windows 11. One requires administrator privileges and the >other a manual install because the installer no longer works but the

It's easy to verify what I have just said. Anyone with Windows 11 can
run Task Manager and it will show all 32 bit programs running. It says
32 bit in brackets next to the exe.

You should have bought a laptop with Windows 7 installed. Own it.

Have you tried "winevdm on 64-bit Windows", which claims to be able run
older (16-bit Windows 1.x, 2.x, 3.0, 3.1, etc.) software on 64-bit Windows?

alt.windows7.general IS a legitimate group. Maybe your provider doesn't
carry it.

Just out of interest, what 8-bit programs are you still running Steve?
TBH, I prefer to run stuff that old on the original hardware for lots of >reasons but that's a debate for another time. I look forward to your
reply to occam as I am genuinely intrigued about what programs from that
era are so important to you that you recommend foregoing Microsoft's
latest and greatest. To me it's simple. It will soon be their only

11" you say. Is that "at all costs"? Sounds a bit reckless to me in
exchange for a bit of nostalgia you could indulge in many other ways. No?

Yes, I do have nostalgia for research data I have collected over the
last 30 years, still keep adding to, and still want to access every
day.
Not all of us use computers just to play silly games with.

Yeah, I don't know why people want to play games. Writing them is a
blast though and very challenging. Databases however are not my thing,
but each to their own. I wouldn't call them silly mind, the only way I
can describe my feelings about them is akin to how I imagine it feels to
have an alien sucking your life force out of you.
I am still struggling with this 8 bit thing though. The applications you mention seem to run on DOS. Wasn't that 16 bit. I didn't really play
with PCs back then much. I mean 8 bit processors only directly address
64k although you can page in blocks of memory but even so the amount of
data you seem to suggest you have collected would indicate a bit of a struggle going on so how does that all work.
