Google's powerful new Gemini 4 Argon model is now available to subscribers, but its practical benefits for everyday users may be harder to identify

For the average Gemini user, the sheer power of the new Gemini 4 Argon model begs the question: why do you need it?
Google has made Gemini 4 Argon readily available in the Gemini app for Google AI Pro or Ultra subscribers. Simply pick it from the list of models available at the top of the conversation. Google brags about the model's advanced reasoning, multi-step problem-solving, and other improvements provided by the sophisticated AI, but it's a little much for helping write an email. Whether Argon can outperform its predecessors on complicated benchmarks is less interesting than figuring out what to do with all this additional AI power.
As AI models become increasingly specialized, we may be approaching a point where the technology is advancing faster than people's ability to understand why they need it. Latest Videos From TechRadar Watch full video here: Give
the big model a big problem (Image credit: Shutterstock/mundissima) Gemini 4 Argon certainly has potential uses, for instance, in analyzing complicated information scattered across several files. Imagine comparing three health insurance policies with different deductibles, premiums, coverage exclusions, and out-of-pocket limits. A regular Gemini model can already summarize the policies, but Argon's advanced reasoning could become valuable when calculating how different combinations of medical expenses would affect the total annual cost. It would be great at navigating all kinds of potential healthcare scenarios, tracking multiple interacting variables, identifying relevant exceptions, and calculating their consequences.
The same principle applies to any other complicated project, like renovating
a house and asking the model to evaluate contractor estimates, material
costs, and architectural plans for inconsistencies and potential price overruns. Argon 4 might help when determining how a delayed electrical inspection affects several subsequent jobs and the overall budget. It could also be useful in learning complicated academic subjects that incorporate a lot of interconnected concepts, such as advanced math. All of that is still only potentially better than simply using the less powerful models. It might be as complicated to work out when Argon 4 is necessary as the very projects for which the model is best suited. Overthinking AI It sometimes feels ridiculous how Google is building models capable of tackling extraordinary scientific and engineering challenges, then placing them in the same interface people use to request pancake recipes. The technology is becoming increasingly sophisticated, yet the reasons to choose one model over another remain vague. This is hardly unique to Google. OpenAI and Anthropic have their own incredibly powerful models that seem ill-suited to the average user. The most powerful model isn't always going to be the most useful. Asking Gemini to rewrite an email or suggest dinner ideas probably doesn't require Argon's additional reasoning capabilities. A faster model might deliver an equally useful answer faster. Even the more complicated examples aren't necessarily beyond ordinary Gemini models. Argon's advantage would need to come from handling unusually complicated combinations of constraints.
The challenge for Google is that users can't easily recognize which assignments justify a more powerful model. In that case, the model picker becomes an annoyance and not a feature.
Right now, most Gemini users should stick to the less intense models and reserve Gemini 4 Argon for assignments where they would struggle. Argon 4 is apparently a remarkable technical achievement with huge possible benefits in some research, but I don't need something capable of solving quantum
computing problems on an everyday basis. AI developers have become very good at building models capable of extraordinary work, but the most impressive
feat would be explaining when ordinary people actually need them. Follow TechRadar on Google News and add us as a preferred source to get our expert news, reviews, and opinion in your feeds. The best business laptops for all budgets Our top picks, based on real-world testing and comparisons
