What was your first commodore computer? Mine was only the C64 and to honest I never used it much. Great computer though.
Same here. My first computer was a C64. I got mine from a recycling
center for free in 1995 complete with disks, power supply, and a 1541 II Then there was the mystery on how to run it. No one I asked in my area
I got my C64 ~ 1983 when I was 16. I had saved up the money working at a grocery store at $3.50 an hour, so it took some time... I got it and I was
lost too. I had the casette loader at the time, so the system was painfully slow with programs. I didnt have a modem yet and had no idea of that sort of capability of being able to connect to the other computers. I was scouring Compute! magazine each month and using their programs they would print in the back of the magazine. Of course, it was all compiled stuff so you were
putting in values into memory locations (255, 128, 063, 063, 000, 000... etc) but it got me started.
Once I learned about the VicModem, the world really changed. I hooked up with Westwood BBS (my first one I visited), learned of a local c64 group that met weekly at a nearby pizza restaraunt in one of their back rooms to scour
warez, got my hands on a 1541 drive and the my path was started.
The BBS scene was the key... the information sharing for the C64 scene via
the BBS really helped me become intimately familiar with it. I eventually
went to C128 w/ RAM expansion and the 1581 drives. It was fabulous and a huge part of my upbringing.
The mind boggling thing is how we were just smitten by the ability to load up
a demo of Led Zepplin that was a horrible reproduction compared to today's
MPE and WAV standards, took about 5-7 minutes to load off 1541, and played
for 30 seconds. But I guess what do you want from a 64K computer which, on
top of that, only allowed 38K of basic room?
