Re: Hello from the U.S. (Oregon)

Just wanted to drop a hello to everyone. Been exploring the BBSes listed in the SyncTERM terminal program. Not the same as dial-up, but still brings back the nostalgia of the late 80's - early 90's for me.
Hi Squatchman, we have dial up too if you still have your old modem? :)
Ran
a little local BBS back when I was a young man with 286. Drove my poor wife crazy as we only had one phone line and I tied it up at night with the BBS.
I had the same problem but with my parents when I started running a BBS in the 80s. Drove them crazy too - which did help justifying getting a second line for the BBS eventually :)
What was your BBS call and what software did you run?
I spent the rest of my time playing games and crawling the BBSes when I wasn't at work. Amazing she stuck with me all these years!
I used to get into trouble at work for calling BBS's all the time. Eventually I worked for various modem companies where dialing up BBS's was part of the job.
I've really enjoyed reading some of your posts about the past and current affairs of BBSing. I'm working on setting up a small BBS for nostalgia's sake and will host it on a VPS. Playing with Mystic BBS
right
now, but not sure I'll stick with it. If you have thoughts, let me know...
I'm running two BBS's at the moment. I originally set up Magnum BBS on Mystic, but decided to switch to Synchronet and it seem to be better supported. I still run the Mystic BBS - its now called Bigtime BBS and can be accessed here:
bigtimebbs.net:2323
Its a basic install with no doors or file areas set up for now. I need to get around to doing something with it.
Both are still in active development, and both are popular, however Mystic is now closed source, whereas Synchronet is open source.
I like Synchronet due to the vast documentation wiki.synchro.net, IRC support channel irc.synchro.net and active development gitlab.synchro.net
Both systems I think are great so you wont go wrong with either.
Let me know if you need any help / support with setting up your BBS.
