do (as spam prevention)...
It's really too bad that somewhere along the way when FTN and
BBS messaging was purely direct B2B [bbs to bbs] and
represented snoop-free environments that some form of
encryption wasn't considered as part of the message format
later when internet was becoming the defacto transport
mechanism and "porting" to nntp-style bases and opening message
bases with open-web acesss was simply "fun" to do. Keeping
content of the messages out of the reach of skimmers and non-
bbs folk would have been wise.
