That happened to me quite often before Uber arrived here...
I think people create their own independent "ubers" anyway. It
wouldn't be too hard using any social media app that already
exists. Besides, car-pools have been around a long time, and
still exist too.
When I was in university, many students posted requests for
rides out of the city to get home - especially during long
weekends or holidays.
I offered some rides myself. I was about 200km from home, and
could accommodate drop-offs in a couple of cities enroute to
my home. It was pretty cool to get some $s to cover fuel
expences.
This lovely scene greeted me yesterday morning as I was waiting
for my taxi ride. I should have probably just borrowed one of
the equus caballus models right in front of me:
