Several pilots spotted a man in a jetpack over Los Angeles recently.
The man flew at an altitude of almost a kilometer, on an approach
route to the airport. The FBI has started an investigation.
The jetpack man was first spotted by the pilots of American Airlines
flight 1997 from Philadelphia. They informed air traffic control that
he flew less than 300 meters from their Airbus A321. A short time
later, the pilots of a SkyWest flight also reported it.
It is of course very dangerous to fly with a jetpack at that altitude.
If such a person collides with an airplane, it will almost certainly
lead to a serious incident. The jetpack man is still being searched
for. For now there doesn't seem to be any trace of him.
Did he not file a IFR flight plan as it sound like he was in the approach
phase ?
