Based on my upgrade experience (failed - DVD & network) it will be a lot longer!
I have had to do a fresh install
I always do fresh installs for my own personal use. That was advice I
read in my beginnings with Mandrake in 2002, and with two exceptions, it
has always worked for me. One exception was with Mandrake, and that was
my own fault because I had used the manufacturer's software to partition
my hard drive, instead of letting the Mandrake installer do it. The
other was the bug with the Mageia 4 Classical DVD that prompted the
creation of Mageia 4.1.
However, in my role as a member of the QA team, I have done many, many installs from the various isos, including some upgrade installs. All of
my upgrade installs of Mageia 7 were successful, on both virtual and
real hardware, even when Mageia 7 was still in Cauldron at the beta stages.
Of course it's impossible for us to test all possible upgrade
possibilities. Everyone's system is different, unique. I maintain five
sets of hardware, with three of them having multiple installs of Mageia
6 and 7, and each of them is unique in some way.
So it's quite possible that your mileage will vary from mine, In fact,
it's all but certain that it will. That's why I always advise a clean
install as being most likely to be free of trouble.
Really wish they come out with a LTS version.
Vince
We simply don't have the manpower for an LTS version in addition to the current Official and Cauldron versions. It has been a strain on the devs
and QA now to maintain Mageia 6 until its EOL tomorrow, along with
maintaining Mageia 7 and working on Cauldron (which will be Mageia 8).
Remember, Mageia is a community-based distro, staffed entirely by
volunteers who do this in their spare time. And we never have enough volunteers. We need more people, of all skill levels, if we are to
continue, even at our present level of support. The Mageia community is fantastic. Anybody wishing to speak up, regardless of skill level or
position, is listened to and treated with respect. Just try doing that
at one of the "big name" distros.
If anyone wishes to help us produce and maintain Mageia, please have a
look at
https://www.mageia.org/en/community/ and see if there is a place
where you feel you may fit in. (Once the website is back up, of course...)
